When You Need Full Excavation vs. Milling

Not every failed surface needs a full dig-out — but some absolutely do, and paving over a bad base just copies the failure into new asphalt. Here’s how we call it on a site walk.

You need full excavation when you see:

  • Alligator cracking — the interconnected crack pattern that looks like a cracked mudflat. It means the base has failed structurally, not just the surface.
  • Sunken lanes or depressions — pavement that has settled unevenly, signaling subgrade movement or base loss underneath.
  • Standing water that doesn’t drain — water sitting on asphalt after rain indicates a drainage or base slope problem that overlay won’t fix.
  • Cracks wider than ¼ inch with crumbling edges — deep fractures that have allowed water infiltration through multiple seasons.
  • Pavement over 20 years old with widespread deterioration — at that stage, surface repair is cosmetic; the base needs assessment and typically replacement.
  • Failed base confirmed on probe — soft or saturated material detected when we check below the surface on a site walk.

Milling works when: surface cracking is limited to the top layer, the base shows no movement, drainage is functioning, and a 1–2 inch mill-and-overlay will restore proper grade. Our Asphalt Excavation Process

1. Break Out & Remove the Old Asphalt

There it’s processed into reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), a recycled aggregate incorporated into future hot mix asphalt batches. The material you paid to build stays in circulation rather than sitting in a landfill.

How deep do you excavate for an asphalt driveway?
